Fighting for Your Future: Budgeting Basics from the Corner

Your Money is Your Defense

I’ve spent the better part of twenty-five years in a gym in Boyle Heights. I’ve seen kids walk in with nothing but holes in their shoes and a chip on their shoulder the size of a cinderblock. Most of them think money is just something you chase so you can buy the flashiest gear or impress the crowd. But here’s the truth: money isn’t the prize. Money is your defense. If you don’t have your finances in your guard, life is going to hit you with a left hook you didn’t see coming, and you’ll be down for the count before you know what happened.

I was seventeen when Rudy pulled me out of the local gang life. I was broke, angry, and headed for prison. Rudy didn’t just teach me how to throw a jab; he taught me about discipline. Marcus Aurelius says, "Waste no more time arguing about what a good man should be. Be one." That applies to your wallet, too. Stop arguing about why you’re broke. Start acting like the man or woman who controls their own destiny.

Know Your Record

In the ring, you study the tape. You look at where your opponent hits hard and where you leave yourself open. Your bank account is exactly the same. Most people are terrified to look at their bank statements because they know it’s a mess. They’re fighting blind.

For the next thirty days, I want you to track every single cent. I don’t care if it’s a five-dollar coffee or a subscription you forgot about. Write it down. Use an app, use a notebook, use a napkin—I don’t care, just get it on paper. When you see exactly where your money is leaking, you gain control. You can’t fix a hole in your defense if you don’t know it’s there.

The 50/30/20 Strategy: Your Game Plan

I like a simple game plan. Overcomplicate the strategy, and you’ll get knocked out. I tell my fighters to stick to the 50/30/20 rule. It’s not fancy, but it works every time:

If your numbers don’t fit this? Don’t panic. Adjust your life to fit the plan, not the other way around. If you’re spending 80% on rent, you’ve got to find a way to increase your income or look at your living situation. You are the coach of your own life. Make the call.

The Philosophy of 'Enough'

I’ve been working as a youth counselor for a long time, and I see a lot of young people thinking that happiness is at the end of a receipt. They think if they buy the right car or the right logo, the anxiety goes away. Marcus Aurelius wrote, "The happiness of your life depends upon the quality of your thoughts." If you think you need more to be happy, you’ll never have enough.

Budgeting isn’t just about math; it’s about character. It’s about being able to say "no" to the things that don’t serve your long-term vision so you can say "yes" to the things that matter. When you stop chasing the temporary high of a purchase, you start building something that lasts. You stop living for the next round and start fighting for the championship.

Don’t Quit Before the Bell

Some of you are going to mess this up. You’ll have a bad month, you’ll overspend, or an emergency will hit. Don't throw the towel in. In the ring, you get hit. You get hurt. The question isn't whether you get hit; the question is whether you stay down.

Get back up. Adjust the budget. Cut the fat. Keep the discipline. Budgeting is a practice, just like throwing a perfect hook. It takes repetition. It takes grit. But once you get the rhythm, it’s the most empowering feeling in the world. You’re no longer a victim of your bank balance; you’re the one running the show.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed or just need someone to help you look at the tape on your finances, drop a comment below or come visit the gym. We’re in the corner for each other. Let’s get to work.
