Stop Faking It: Why Building Confidence Isn’t About Your Outfit

By Nina — I'm the friend who tells you what you need to hear about your situationship. ·

Confidence Isn’t a Vibe, It’s a Practice

Listen, I see you. You’re scrolling through Instagram, watching someone post a ‘get ready with me’ video, and you’re convinced that if you just bought those boots or mastered that specific wing-liner, you’d finally feel like that girl. You know, the one who walks into a room and owns it without apologizing for taking up space.

I’m going to stop you right there: You’re confusing confidence with aesthetics. And honestly? It’s ruining your potential.

I’ve spent the better part of my twenties watching friends—and myself, back when I was still settling for guys who couldn’t even be bothered to text back—wait for a ‘confidence upgrade’ that never comes. We wait until we lose five pounds, or get the promotion, or find someone to validate our existence. We treat confidence like a designer bag we’re ‘saving up’ for. But here’s the reality check: Confidence isn’t something you acquire once you hit a milestone. It’s an internal muscle you have to stop neglecting.

Stop Outsourcing Your Self-Worth

When we talk about ‘building confidence,’ we’re usually talking about how we handle the noise. Most of the time, your lack of confidence isn’t a lack of talent or beauty. It’s a lack of boundaries.

Think about the last time you felt small. Was it because you weren’t good enough? Or was it because you were letting someone push you around, or you were performing a version of yourself that didn’t actually fit? When you spend your life waiting for external approval—a ‘like,’ a compliment from your boss, a reply from that situationship guy who hasn’t asked you a real question in weeks—you are literally handing your keys over to someone else.

If you want to build actual, unshakable confidence, you have to stop outsourcing your value. Period. If your confidence is tied to how someone else treats you, you’ll never actually be secure. You’ll just be a hostage to their mood swings.

The ‘Micro-Win’ Method

I’m not a fan of ‘fake it till you make it.’ That’s just gaslighting yourself, and we have enough of that in our love lives, thanks. Instead, I use the Micro-Win Method.

Confidence is built through evidence. You don’t believe you’re capable of hard things if you have no history of doing hard things. Start small. I mean, insultingly small. Did you say no to a coffee date you didn’t want to go on? That’s a win. Did you speak up in a meeting when you usually stay silent? That’s a win. Did you delete the number of the guy who only hits you up at 11:00 PM on a Tuesday? That is a massive, life-changing win.

Keep a ‘Win Log’ on your phone. Every day, write down three things you did that proved you’re in the driver’s seat of your life. It sounds cheesy, but when you look back at that list after a month, you’ll realize you’re not as fragile as you think you are. You’re building a case for yourself, by yourself.

Stop Asking For Permission

I spent three years in a relationship where I felt like I had to check in with my partner’s emotional climate before I could have a good day. It was exhausting, and it made me feel like my own life was secondary.

Building confidence requires a healthy dose of rebellion. You have to stop asking for permission to be who you are. Stop asking your friends if your outfit is ‘okay.’ Stop asking your partner if your career goals are ‘realistic.’ Stop waiting for the world to give you the green light to take up space.

If you want to wear the loud dress, wear it. If you want to ask for that raise, ask. If you want to end the situationship because it’s boring you to tears, do it. The world will try to keep you small because small people are easier to manage. Don’t be one of them.

The Hard Truth About Failing

Here is the part where I tell you what you need to hear: You’re going to fail. You’re going to say the wrong thing in a meeting, or you’re going to get rejected, or you’re going to look back and cringe at something you did.

Most people think confidence means never failing. It’s the opposite. Confidence is the ability to fail, look at the wreckage, and say, ‘Well, that sucked, but I’m still here.’ When you stop being terrified of looking stupid or being rejected, you become invincible. You stop performing, and you start living. And trust me, the version of you that actually lives is a hell of a lot more attractive than the version that’s constantly trying to be perfect.

You Are the Main Character

Stop treating your life like it’s a practice run for a future that hasn’t happened yet. You are the protagonist. If you don’t like the way the plot is moving, you’re allowed to rewrite the script. You’re allowed to pivot. You’re allowed to change your mind.

Building confidence is just the process of coming home to yourself. It’s realizing that the only opinion that actually dictates your quality of life is your own. So, stop looking for it in his DMs or in your follower count. Look in the mirror, take a deep breath, and start making decisions like the person you actually want to be, not the person you think you have to be to make others comfortable.

So, what’s one thing you’ve been holding back on because you’re waiting to ‘feel’ confident enough? Do it today. And if you’re scared, just shoot me a message and tell me about it. We can break it down together.
