Beyond Just Water: The Ultimate Guide to Optimal Hydration for Performance

Let’s Get Real About Your Inner Plumbing

Happy August, everyone! If you’re living in Scottsdale like I am, you know that stepping outside right now feels less like walking into the heat and more like being hugged by a giant, angry blow-dryer. It’s brutal.

I’ve been getting so many DMs lately from clients saying, “Brooke, I’m drinking my gallon, but I still feel like a dried-up sponge by noon.” I totally get it. When I was navigating my own health journey back in my teens—when I was dealing with a lot of anxiety and trying to figure out how to fuel my body properly—I used to think hydration was just about chugging plain water until I felt sick.

Spoiler alert: That’s not it. Hydration is about retention and electrolytes. If you’re just drinking plain water and running to the bathroom every twenty minutes, you’re missing the point. Let’s dial in your hydration so you can actually perform at your best, feel less anxious, and crush those 5 a.m. sessions with me.

Electrolytes Aren’t Just for Pro Athletes

I hear it all the time: “I don’t need electrolytes, I’m not a marathon runner.” Yes, you do! If you’re lifting heavy, sweating in a boutique gym, or just surviving an Arizona summer, your body is flushing out minerals faster than you realize.

Sodium, potassium, and magnesium are the “big three.” Think of them as the keys that unlock your cells so the water you’re drinking can actually get inside. Without them, you’re just washing the water through your system.

My go-to tip: Don’t overthink it. You don’t need a fancy, neon-colored sports drink loaded with refined sugar. Look for a clean electrolyte powder to add to your first bottle of the day. If you’re sensitive to artificial sweeteners, a pinch of high-quality sea salt and a squeeze of fresh lemon in your water works wonders. It’s simple, cheap, and it actually works.

The “Color Check” and Other Non-Negotiables

We’ve all heard the “pee clear” advice, right? Honestly, that’s a bit of an old-school myth. If your urine is completely clear, you might actually be over-hydrating and flushing out too many minerals. You’re looking for a pale straw color—think light lemonade, not apple juice.

But let’s talk about timing. If you’re waiting until you’re thirsty to drink, you’re already behind. Thirst is a lagging indicator. By the time your brain sends that signal, you’re likely already 1-2% dehydrated, which is enough to tank your lifting performance and spike your cortisol levels.

Actionable step: Set a “hydration anchor.” For me, it’s my alarm. When that 4:45 a.m. buzzer goes off, the first thing I do isn’t grab my phone—it’s chug 16 ounces of water. It wakes up your metabolism and sets the tone for the day. If you have a desk job, keep a water bottle right next to your mouse or trackpad. If it’s in your peripheral vision, you’ll reach for it.

Why Hydration is Your Mental Health’s Best Friend

This hits close to home for me. When I was younger and struggling with anxiety, I didn’t realize how much my physical state dictated my mental state. Dehydration causes fatigue, brain fog, and irritability—which, surprise, surprise, makes anxiety way harder to manage.

When your body is properly hydrated, your blood volume is optimal, your heart doesn’t have to work as hard to pump, and your nervous system stays more regulated. I’ve noticed that on the days I’m consistent with my water and mineral intake, my 5 a.m. clients get a much more “enthusiastic” version of Brooke. It sounds small, but it’s foundational. Treat your body like the high-performance machine it is, and it will pay you back in focus and mood stability.

Don’t Forget Your Food Water

One of the biggest misconceptions in fitness is that water only comes from a bottle. You’d be shocked how much hydration you can get from your plate.

In this heat, I’m all about high-water-content foods. Think watermelon, cucumbers, strawberries, and zucchini. They come packed with vitamins and fiber, which helps your body absorb the water more efficiently. It’s like a built-in hydration boost. Plus, adding these to your meals makes eating for your goals feel a lot less like a chore and a lot more like fuel.

Let’s Keep the Momentum Going

Listen, I know adding another “habit” to your list can feel overwhelming. Fitness is supposed to be a tool that makes your life better, not a checklist that adds more stress. Start small. Pick one thing from this post—maybe the morning chug or adding a pinch of salt to your water—and do it for a week.

I’m curious: what’s your biggest struggle when it comes to hitting your water goals? Is it the taste, the bathroom trips, or do you just plain forget? Drop a comment below or shoot me a DM on Personible. I’m always hanging out in my inbox, and I’d love to hear how you’re doing.

Remember, you don’t have to be perfect; you just have to be consistent. See you at the rack tomorrow morning!

Stay hydrated, bestie!
