Listen to Your Body: The Pro-Active Guide to Injury Prevention

It’s Not Just About Being Sore

Hey guys, Brooke here! If you’ve been hanging out with me for a while, you know I’m all about that 5am club energy. There is nothing like walking into a quiet gym while the sun is just starting to peek over the Scottsdale horizon. But lately, I’ve had a few clients come to me with that familiar ‘twinge’—you know the one. It’s not quite a sharp pain, but it’s enough to make you skip your heavy squats or swap your deadlifts for something... easier.

I’ve been there. Back when I was a teenager, I used to think that pushing through any kind of pain was the only way to prove I was actually working. I was dealing with a lot of anxiety and some really unhealthy patterns with food, and honestly, the gym felt like the only place where I had control. I thought if I didn't leave the gym limping, I wasn't doing it right. Spoiler alert: That mindset is a fast track to being sidelined for months.

Injury prevention isn’t just ‘boring stuff you do so you don’t get hurt.’ It’s actually the secret sauce to being able to train for the next ten, twenty, or thirty years. Let’s talk about how to keep your body moving without the dreaded ‘I think I pulled something’ text.

Rethink Your Warm-Up (It’s Not Just Stretching)

We need to stop treating the warm-up like a chore you check off a list. If you’re walking onto the gym floor and immediately grabbing a heavy dumbbell, we need to have a little talk.

Your muscles are like rubber bands. If you take a frozen rubber band and yank it apart, it snaps. But if you warm it up? It becomes pliable and strong. Your warm-up should be dynamic, not static. Save the long, held stretches for after your session or before bed. Before you lift, you want to get blood flowing to the joints you’re about to use.

Try this for five minutes before your next session: 1. World’s Greatest Stretch: Step back into a lunge, drop that back knee, and rotate your torso. It hits your hips, your spine, and your shoulders all at once. 2. Band Pull-Aparts: Keep your shoulders healthy by engaging your upper back before you even touch a bar. 3. Glute Bridges: Get those glutes firing! Most of us spend all day sitting at desks or in cars; your glutes are probably ‘asleep’ when you walk into the gym. Wake them up so they can take the load off your lower back.

The Art of the 'Deload' Week

I know, I know—nobody wants to hear the word ‘deload.’ We all want to hit PRs every single week. But here is the truth: your central nervous system needs a break just as much as your muscles do.

If you’re lifting at 90-100% intensity for weeks on end, your form will eventually break down. That’s where the micro-tears turn into something more serious. A deload week is simply a week where you pull back the volume or the intensity by about 30-50%. You’re still moving, you’re still in the habit, but you’re giving your joints and your nervous system a chance to recover and rebuild stronger.

Think of it as taking a step back to sprint forward. I usually take a deload week every 6 to 8 weeks. It keeps me sane, and it keeps my joints happy.

Master the 'Mind-Muscle' Connection

This is where my kinesiology background comes in. You can move a heavy weight from point A to point B, but are you using the right muscles to get it there?

If you’re doing a lat pulldown but your traps are doing all the work, you’re going to end up with neck pain. If you’re squatting and your knees are caving in because your feet aren't planted, you’re putting unnecessary torque on your ligaments.

Before you go heavy, spend a week focusing on 'tempo' lifting. Slow down the eccentric (the lowering phase) of every movement. Count to three on the way down. If you can’t control the weight on the way down, it’s too heavy. Period. When you slow down, you force your stabilizing muscles to activate, which protects your joints from taking the brunt of the force.

Listen to the Whispers, Not the Screams

I want you to be able to train forever. My goal as your gym bestie is to help you build a body that feels good, not just one that looks good.

If your body is whispering to you—a slight ache in your wrist, a weird feeling in your knee, or just feeling 'off'—listen to it. It’s way easier to take two days off now than it is to take two months off for physical therapy later. You are not a failure for taking a rest day. You are a smart athlete who knows that longevity is the ultimate goal.

So, how are your joints feeling lately? Are you ignoring any 'whispers' that might need some attention? Slide into my DMs or drop a comment below—I’d love to hear how you’re keeping your training sustainable. Let’s keep moving, keep growing, and keep showing up for ourselves, one smart rep at a time!
