Mastering the AM Grind: Why Morning Exercise is Your Secret Weapon

The 5:00 AM Reality Check

I’m not going to sit here and tell you that waking up before the sun is some magical, mystical experience. Most mornings, when my alarm goes off, the bed feels like a magnet and my golden retriever, Kobe, is definitely not interested in moving. But here’s the thing: back when I was at A&M, before my ACL popped, I thought my life was defined by the jersey I wore. When that injury happened, everything I thought I knew about my identity went out the window. I had to learn the hard way that discipline isn’t about what you feel like doing; it’s about what you decide to do when the easy option is staring you in the face.

In August, especially here in Dallas, the heat is already trying to kill you by 10:00 AM. If you aren’t getting your work in early, you’re just giving yourself more time throughout the day to find an excuse to skip it. Morning exercise isn’t just about burning calories; it’s about winning the first battle of the day before the rest of the world even wakes up.

Why Morning Movement Changes the Game

I see clients every single day who try to squeeze in a workout after a 10-hour workday. By 6:00 PM, your nervous system is fried, your willpower is depleted, and the couch is calling your name. That’s not a recipe for consistency; that’s a recipe for burnout.

When you train in the morning, you’re hitting your body with a rush of endorphins and dopamine that carries you through your meetings, your errands, and your stress. It’s like clearing the cache on your computer. You’re starting your day from a position of control. You’ve already done something hard, so when the unexpected challenges of the day hit, you’re already in the mindset of an achiever. You’ve already won.

The “No-Excuses” Morning Blueprint

I’m a coach, not a drill sergeant who just yells. I want you to actually see results, which means we need a system that isn’t going to fail you by Wednesday. Here is how I structure my morning, and how you can do the same:

1. The Night-Before Audit: The biggest reason people skip morning workouts is decision fatigue. If you have to spend 15 minutes finding your socks, your headphones, and your gym bag, you’ve already lost. Pack your gear, lay it out, and have your water bottle filled before you go to sleep. Remove the friction.

2. The 10-Minute Wake-Up Window: Don’t jump straight from deep sleep to a heavy back squat. Your spine isn’t ready for that. Spend 10 minutes moving. I’m talking about cat-cow stretches, hip mobility, or just a brisk walk around the block with Kobe. Get the blood flowing to your joints before you ask them to bear weight.

3. Fuel for the Grind: I get asked all the time if you should train fasted. Look, it’s personal preference, but if you’re doing high-intensity work, your body needs glucose. If you’re feeling sluggish, try a light carb source—like a banana or a slice of toast with some almond butter—about 20 minutes before you start. Don’t overthink it, just give your engine enough to run.

4. Start Small, Then Scale: If you’re not a morning person, don’t try to hit a 90-minute bodybuilding session on day one. Start with 30 minutes. Be consistent for two weeks. Once your body clock adjusts, then we can talk about increasing the volume. Success isn't about one epic session; it’s about 300 decent ones.

Beyond the Physical

Remember, I’ve been through the rehab process. I know what it’s like to lose your ability to move the way you want to. Morning exercise is a celebration of what your body can do. It’s a reminder that you are resilient. When you show up for yourself at 5:30 AM, you’re telling yourself that your health, your goals, and your future are the top priority.

That ACL injury taught me that we don’t get to control everything, but we do get to control our effort. You can’t control the market, your boss, or the weather, but you can control that first hour of your day. Take that control back.

Let’s Keep the Momentum Going

I know the first week is going to be a grind. Your body is going to fight you, and your brain is going to invent a thousand reasons why staying in bed is a better idea. Don’t listen to it. You’re building a version of yourself that doesn’t fold under pressure.

How are you planning to tackle your first morning session this week? Drop a comment below and tell me what your biggest hurdle is. I’m here to help you clear it. Let’s get to work.
