Stop Ignoring Your Mobility Routine: The Secret to Pain-Free Gains

By Brooke — Your gym bestie who actually shows up at 5am. Will make you love leg day. ·

Let’s Be Real: We All Hate Stretching

I get it. You wake up at 5:00 AM, you crush your workout, you hit your protein goal, and then you see a 'mobility routine' on your program and think, 'Do I really have to?'

I used to be exactly like you. Back when I was 17 and dealing with some major anxiety, fitness was my escape. I treated the gym like a battleground. I thought if I wasn't lifting heavy or sweating until I was practically vibrating, I wasn't 'doing it right.' I ignored my body’s pleas for help until my lower back started screaming at me during squats.

Here’s the truth: Your muscles are like a high-performance engine, but mobility is the oil. Without it, you’re just grinding metal against metal. If you want to keep lifting for the next forty years—not just the next four—you have to start treating your joints with the same respect you treat your pre-workout.

Why Mobility Isn’t Just 'Flexibility'

People confuse mobility with flexibility all the time. Flexibility is passive—like how far you can reach toward your toes while sitting on the floor. Mobility is active. It’s your ability to move your joint through a full range of motion under control.

You can be the most flexible person in the world and still have terrible mobility. But if you want to hit a deep squat without your heels popping off the ground or your torso folding in half, you need mobility. It’s about bulletproofing your body so that life (and heavy weights) can’t break it.

My Go-To 'No-Excuses' Mobility Flow

I’m not asking you to spend an hour on a yoga mat. I know you’re busy. This flow takes exactly 8 minutes. You can do it in your living room, in your bedroom, or even in the corner of the gym before you grab your barbell.

1. 90/90 Hip Switches (2 minutes)

Sit on the floor with both knees bent at 90-degree angles. Use your hands for support behind you and rotate your knees from one side to the other. This is the absolute king of hip health. It opens up your internal and external rotation, which is non-negotiable for squat depth.

2. Cat-Cow with a Twist (2 minutes)

Get on all fours. As you move through Cat-Cow, add a thoracic rotation. Reach one arm up to the ceiling, then thread it through the gap under your opposite arm. Do this on both sides. Most of us spend way too much time hunched over laptops and phones—this undoes that desk-slouch instantly.

3. World’s Greatest Stretch (2 minutes)

Lunge forward with your left foot, place your right hand on the floor, and reach your left arm to the ceiling. Then, rock your hips back to straighten that front leg. This hits your hip flexors, hamstrings, and thoracic spine all in one. There’s a reason it’s called the 'world’s greatest'—it works.

4. Ankle Rocks (2 minutes)

Find a wall. Put your foot a few inches away from it and try to touch your knee to the wall without your heel lifting. Tight ankles are the silent killer of good squat form. This simple move keeps your dorsiflexion on point.

How to Build the Habit (Without the Guilt)

I know the feeling of 'I don't have time.' But let’s flip the script. You don't have time not to. If you’re injured, you’re not training. If you’re not training, you’re not hitting your goals.

My best tip? Stack it. I do my mobility while my coffee is brewing in the morning. If I’m at the gym, I do it right after I put my lifting shoes on but before I touch the bar. It acts as a mental trigger—it tells my brain, 'Okay, Brooke, it’s time to focus.'

Don’t wait until you’re feeling 'tight' to start. By the time you feel the tightness, the compensation pattern has already started. Be proactive. Your future self—the one who’s still hitting PRs in her 40s—will thank you for it.
