Stop Overcomplicating Protein Intake: Your No-Stress Guide to Fueling Up

By Brooke — Your gym bestie who actually shows up at 5am. Will make you love leg day. ·

Let’s Talk Protein Without the Headache

Hey friends! If you’ve been hanging out in my DMs lately, you know that the #1 question I get—besides “Brooke, why are you at the gym at 4:45 AM?”—is all about protein. Specifically: How much do I actually need? Does it have to be a supplement? Will I get ‘bulky’ if I eat too much chicken?

I get it. When I was dealing with my own health struggles back in my teens, the fitness industry felt like a minefield of conflicting advice. I thought eating was the enemy, and then I thought eating was a math equation I couldn't solve. Spoiler alert: It’s not. Protein is just fuel, and honestly? It’s the best fuel you’ve got for feeling strong, sharp, and capable.

Today, let’s strip away the gym-bro science and get into what actually works for your body—no stress, no obsessive tracking, just real results.

Why We’re Obsessed (For Good Reason)

Think of your muscles like a house that’s constantly undergoing minor renovations. Every time you show up for leg day, you’re essentially knocking down a wall. If you don’t have the supplies (protein) to build it back up, the house stays a construction zone.

Protein is made up of amino acids, which are the building blocks of your muscles, skin, hair, and even your hormones. When I started prioritizing protein, the biggest change wasn’t just my physique—it was my energy. My anxiety levels dropped, my brain fog cleared, and I stopped feeling like I was running on empty by 2:00 PM. It’s not just about gains; it’s about feeling like a functional human being.

The “How Much?” Question: A Simple Framework

I’m going to make this easy for you. Forget the extreme bodybuilding calculators you see online. If you’re active, a great general rule of thumb is to aim for about 0.8 to 1 gram of protein per pound of your goal body weight.

If that sounds like a lot of math, try the “Plate Method” instead. I use this with all my online coaching clients who hate counting macros:

Don’t stress if you aren’t perfect. Consistency beats perfection every single time. If you hit 80% of your goal, you’re winning.

My “Don’t Think, Just Do” Protein Hacks

Look, we’re all busy. I’m either training clients at the gym, answering emails, or trying to soak up a little Scottsdale sun. Here is how I make sure I hit my numbers without spending all day in the kitchen:

1. Front-load your day: If you hit 30g of protein at breakfast, the rest of the day feels like a breeze. It stops that 4:00 PM “I need a bagel and a nap” crash. 2. Keep it simple: I don’t do gourmet recipes. I do sheet-pan chicken, pre-boiled eggs, and Greek yogurt bowls. If you can make it in under 15 minutes, it’s a winner. 3. Use the convenience items: There is absolutely zero shame in using protein powder, beef jerky, or canned tuna. If it helps you reach your goal and keeps you from feeling hangry, it’s a tool. Use it. 4. Vegetarian? No worries: If you don’t eat meat, you just have to be a bit more intentional. Pair your lentils and beans with grains to get a complete amino acid profile, and don’t be afraid of high-quality plant-based protein powders.

The Mental Shift: Food as Self-Care

I want to touch on something real for a second. Coming from a background where I struggled with my relationship with food, I know that obsessing over “grams of protein” can sometimes feel like just another way to track your worth.

I want you to change the narrative. Instead of tracking protein to “lose weight” or “look a certain way,” try tracking it to see how much more energy you have. Try tracking it to see how much faster your legs recover after those heavy squat sessions. When you focus on what your body can do rather than what it looks like, the whole process changes. It becomes an act of kindness toward yourself, not a punishment.

You’ve Got This

Protein isn’t magic—it’s just the consistent effort of giving your body what it needs to thrive. You don’t need to be perfect, and you definitely don’t need to be a professional athlete to care about your intake. You just need to show up for yourself, one meal at a time.

How are you hitting your protein goals this week? Are you a Greek yogurt lover or more of a savory breakfast person? Drop a comment below or shoot me a DM—I seriously love hearing what’s working for you guys. Let’s chat!
