Strength Training Is Your Life Insurance Policy: Why You Need to Start Today

It’s Not Just About the Mirror

I’m sitting here in my Dallas home office, watching Kobe chase a rogue tennis ball across the rug, and I’m thinking about the D1 court back at A&M. When I tore my ACL junior year, my world didn’t just stop—it shattered. I spent my whole life thinking my identity was wrapped up in how fast I could cut or how high I could jump. When that was gone, I had to learn the hard way that strength isn't just about what you can show off on Instagram.

Strength training is the literal foundation of your longevity. It’s your life insurance policy. Whether you’re 22 and trying to add mass or 55 and trying to make sure you can play with your grandkids without your back screaming at you, the iron doesn’t care about your excuses. It just cares about the work.

The “Why” Behind the Barbell

I see a lot of people in the gym terrified of lifting heavy. They think they’ll get 'too bulky' or that they’ll hurt themselves. Let me be clear: you are far more likely to hurt yourself by being weak than by being strong.

Strength training increases bone density, improves metabolic health, and creates a hormonal environment that keeps you feeling like yourself well into your later years. When I was rehabbing that knee, I wasn't trying to look like a bodybuilder. I was trying to rebuild a machine that had broken down. That process taught me that strength is about resilience. It’s about building a body that can withstand the chaos life throws at it.

Stop Guessing, Start Loading

If you aren’t tracking your lifts, you aren’t training; you’re just exercising. And there’s a massive difference. Exercising is burning calories. Training is a deliberate pursuit of improvement.

To see real change, you need to understand the concept of mechanical tension. You need to be putting enough stress on your muscles that they have no choice but to adapt and grow. Here is how I break it down for my clients:

1. The Compound Foundation: 80% of your gym time should be spent on multi-joint movements. Squats, deadlifts, presses, and rows. These movements recruit the most muscle fibers and give you the biggest return on your investment. 2. The 3-Rep Buffer: If you finish a set of 10 and feel like you could have done 10 more, you didn’t train. You moved weight. Aim to finish your sets with about 2-3 reps in the tank (RPE 7-8). That’s the sweet spot for growth without burning out your CNS. 3. Rest Intervals: Stop checking your phone between sets. If you’re lifting heavy, you need 2–3 minutes to let your ATP stores recover. If you want to be strong, you have to be fully recovered to perform at your best on the next set.

Building Your Personal Armor

I’ve coached people from all walks of life—from former athletes like me to busy parents who haven't stepped foot in a gym in a decade. The biggest shift happens when they stop viewing strength training as a 'chore' and start viewing it as 'maintenance.'

Think of your body like your car. If you never change the oil, never rotate the tires, and never check the alignment, it’s going to break down. Strength training is your oil change. It’s your tire rotation. It’s the preventative maintenance that ensures your machine stays on the road for the long haul.

My Challenge to You

If you’ve been sticking to the cardio machines or just floating around the gym without a plan, I want you to make a change this week. Pick three compound movements. Focus on perfect form first, then add just enough weight to make those last two reps feel like a challenge.

Don’t worry about what the guy next to you is benching. Don’t worry about how you look compared to the person on the cover of the magazine. Focus on being 1% stronger than you were last week. That’s how you win. That’s how you build a life—and a body—that lasts.

I’m curious, what’s the one lift you’ve been avoiding because it intimidates you? Let’s talk about it. Drop a comment below or shoot me a message—let’s figure out how to get you under that bar with confidence. No excuses, just results.
