The 5:00 AM Club: Is Morning Exercise Actually Worth the Agony?

The Alarm Clock Struggle is Real

Let’s be real for a second: if you told me five years ago that I’d be voluntarily waking up while the streetlights were still on just to go move metal, I would have laughed in your face. I’m a Denver girl—I love my sleep, I love my slow mornings with a hot coffee, and honestly, the concept of a ‘morning person’ usually makes me want to roll my eyes.

But here we are. It’s July 2026, and after years of balancing gym shifts, online coaching, and the sheer chaos of raising a golden retriever named Barbell (who, for the record, thinks 5:30 AM is the perfect time for a game of fetch), I’ve learned that morning exercise isn’t about being a ‘superhuman.’ It’s about setting the tone for the rest of your life. And sometimes, it’s just about getting the hard stuff done before your brain realizes what’s happening.

Why Morning Exercise Changes the Game

I’m not here to tell you that working out before the sun comes up will turn you into a CEO overnight or that it magically makes you lose weight faster. That’s influencer fluff. The real reason to consider moving your workout to the AM? It’s the one time of day that is truly, 100% yours.

By 10:00 AM, the emails are piling up, the ‘urgent’ requests from clients are rolling in, and your energy is already being siphoned off by the demands of the world. By working out first, you’re prioritizing yourself as the very first task of the day. You’re telling your brain, ‘I am capable of doing something difficult before I’ve even had my second cup of coffee.’ That kind of momentum? It’s addictive.

The “I’m Not a Morning Person” Myth

I hear this from my clients every single week. “Tessa, I’m just not built for it.” Listen, I’m not ‘built’ for it either. My bed in Denver is incredibly comfortable, and gravity feels about ten times stronger at 5:00 AM.

The secret isn’t willpower. Willpower is a finite resource that runs out by lunch. The secret is preparation. If you’re trying to decide what to wear or where your gym bag is when you’re half-asleep, you’ve already lost.

Here’s my non-negotiable protocol for actually getting out the door:

1. The ‘Don’t Think’ Rule: The moment that alarm goes off, you don't negotiate. You don’t ask yourself, ‘Do I feel like working out?’ The answer to that will always be no. You just move. Put your feet on the floor. Keep your gym clothes right next to the bed so you’re literally stepping into them. 2. Hydrate First: Before you even look at your phone, chug 16 ounces of water. Your body is dehydrated after sleeping; waking up your system with water is like hitting the ‘on’ switch for your metabolism and your brain. 3. Have a Plan: Never walk into the gym without knowing what you’re doing. If you’re standing there wondering what exercises to choose, you’ll just default to 20 minutes on the elliptical and go home. Keep a simple, written program on your phone so you can just plug and play.

Keeping it Realistic (Because You’re Human)

Look, I placed second in my weight class last year, and do you know how many mornings I walked into the gym feeling like a total zombie? A lot. Some mornings, you’re not going to hit a PR. You’re going to be slow, you’re going to be stiff, and you’re going to feel like a rusty robot. That’s fine.

Morning exercise is about the habit, not the intensity. If you show up, move your body for 30-45 minutes, and leave, that’s a win. You don’t need to crush a heavy squat session at 6:00 AM every day to see results. Sometimes, a morning workout is just a few sets of bodyweight movements, some mobility work, and a quick walk with the dog.

How to Transition Without Hating Your Life

Don’t try to jump from 8:00 AM workouts to 5:00 AM overnight. You’ll burn out in three days and end up hating the process. Try shifting your wake-up time by 15 minutes every few days.

Also, give yourself a reward. I know, we’re adults, but rewards work. My reward? That first sip of coffee after my workout. It tastes a million times better when I know I’ve already done the hard thing. Find your version of that. Maybe it’s a podcast you only listen to during your workout, or a specific breakfast you love. Make the morning a time you actually want to be awake for.

Strength is the Whole Personality

At the end of the day, moving your body in the morning is just another way of practicing discipline. It’s not about being ‘better’ than everyone else because you’re up early; it’s about showing up for yourself when it’s easy to hit snooze and stay in the comfort zone.

Remember, your strength isn’t just in your quads or your back. It’s in the grit it takes to stand up when you’d rather stay down. And if you’re struggling to get started, just know that Barbell and I are probably out there somewhere, struggling through a set of lunges, too. You aren’t alone in the grind.
