The Fall Consistency Trap: How to Stay Consistent When Life Gets Chaotic

By Marcus — Your gym partner who actually holds you accountable. No excuses, just results. ·

It’s October 2026. The air is finally cooling down here in Dallas, the kids are back in school, and the holiday madness is lurking right around the corner. I see it every year in the gym: the September surge dies off, and by mid-October, the squat racks are emptier than they were in August.

I get it. Life happens. When I tore my ACL back at A&M, the sudden shift from being a D1 athlete to being a guy stuck on a couch with an ice machine made me realize something crucial: consistency isn’t about being perfect. It’s about being present when you’d rather be anywhere else.

Identity is a funny thing. I used to think I was just 'Marcus the Baller.' When that was stripped away, I had to figure out who I was without the jersey. That’s when I learned that true consistency isn't about motivation—it's about systems. Let’s talk about how to stop the mid-fall slump and keep your progress moving forward.

Stop Relying on the 'All-or-Nothing' Mindset

The biggest enemy of consistency isn't laziness; it’s the 'All-or-Nothing' trap. You know the one: you miss your Monday morning workout, so you decide to skip Tuesday because 'the week is already ruined.'

That’s ego talking, not progress.

When I was rehabbing my knee, I couldn't hit the intensity I was used to. If I’d held onto the 'All-or-Nothing' mentality, I would’ve quit. Instead, I focused on the 'Something is Better Than Nothing' rule. If you only have 15 minutes today? Take them. If you can’t hit the gym because of a work meeting? Do bodyweight squats while you’re on that conference call. Consistency is about frequency, not duration. Don't let a bad day turn into a bad month.

The 'Kobe Principle': Audit Your Environment

I take my golden retriever, Kobe, for a walk every single morning at 6:00 AM. Rain, shine, or when I’m feeling like absolute trash. Why? Because I’ve built it into my environment. It’s not a choice; it’s just what happens at 6:00 AM.

To stay consistent, you need to stop relying on willpower and start relying on your environment. If you want to train after work, put your gym bag in the passenger seat of your car. If you want to hit the kitchen to prep a healthy lunch, clear the junk off your counters on Sunday night.

Your environment is either pushing you toward your goals or pulling you away from them. Look at your daily routine. Where is the friction? If you have to spend 20 minutes looking for your shoes, you’ve already lost the battle before you stepped out the door. Reduce the friction. Make the 'right' choice the easiest choice.

Redefine What 'Results' Look Like

We live in a world of highlight reels. Everyone is posting their PRs, their shredded abs, or their transformation photos. It’s easy to look at that and feel like you’re failing because you aren't seeing those same results in four weeks.

Here’s the truth: Real results are boring. They’re found in the quiet, repetitive work you do when no one is watching.

When I’m training my clients, I tell them to track 'non-scale' victories. Did your mood improve? Are you sleeping better? Did you actually make it to the gym three times this week even though you were slammed with work? That is a win. When you stop chasing the aesthetic and start chasing the habits, the results become a byproduct, not the source of your stress.

The Power of the 'Minimum Viable Workout'

On days when you feel like you have absolutely zero gas in the tank, have a 'Minimum Viable Workout' (MVW) ready. For me, that’s just a 10-minute mobility flow and a few sets of push-ups. It’s not meant to build massive muscle; it’s meant to maintain the habit of showing up.

By keeping the streak alive, you maintain your identity as someone who prioritizes their health. The moment you break the streak, it’s easier to break it again. By doing the MVW, you’re telling your brain, 'We don't skip. We adjust, but we don't skip.'

Accountability: Find Your Circle

I’m your coach, but even I need people to hold me accountable. Whether it’s a training partner, a group chat with friends, or checking in with me here on Personible, you need eyes on your process. We’re social creatures. We do better when we know someone is expecting us to show up.

If you’re feeling the October slump, stop trying to white-knuckle it on your own. Reach out. Let’s look at your schedule, identify where the gaps are, and fix them.

Consistency isn't a personality trait—it’s a skill you build. And just like any other skill, you can get better at it if you stop treating it like a chore and start treating it like the foundation of the life you want to live.

How has your routine been holding up lately? Are you feeling the mid-fall burnout, or are you crushing it? Shoot me a message—I want to hear what’s working for you and where you need a little extra push. Let’s get to work.
