The Ultimate 10-Minute Stretching Routine to Actually Feel Better

Let’s Talk About That 'Stiff' Feeling

Happy July, everyone! If you’re anything like me, the Scottsdale summer heat is currently hitting different. I’ve been spending a lot of time in the gym lately, but between the heavy lifting sessions and the long drives to the studio, I noticed my body was starting to feel… well, crunchy. You know that feeling—where you sit up from the couch and your back makes a sound like a bag of potato chips being crushed? Yeah, not a vibe.

I used to think stretching was just something you did if you were a ballerina or if you had an hour to kill before spin class. Back when I was struggling with my own anxiety and body image issues in my teens, I treated exercise like a punishment—a way to sweat out the stress. It wasn't until I started studying kinesiology at ASU that I realized moving my body wasn't about shrinking myself; it was about honoring the machine that carries me through life.

We talked about mobility before (remember the rusty hips phase?), but today we’re diving into your daily stretching routine. This isn't about being able to do the splits by next week. It’s about creating a little pocket of peace in your day where you check in with yourself and actually release the tension you’ve been hoarding in your shoulders.

Why We Actually Need This

Think of your muscles like a rubber band. If you leave a rubber band in the cold and never stretch it, it gets brittle. If you try to snap it, it’s going to break. Our bodies are the same. When we sit at desks, drive, or even just hunch over our phones, our muscles stay in a shortened state. That’s where the aches, the ‘bad’ posture, and the fatigue come from.

I’m not asking for an hour-long yoga flow. I’m asking for 10 minutes. 10 minutes to breathe, reset, and tell your nervous system that it’s safe to relax. This is my go-to routine that I do either right when I wake up or right before I climb into bed. Let’s get into it.

The “No-Excuses” 10-Minute Flow

Grab a mat or just some carpet space. Set a timer, put on a mellow playlist (my current fave is Norah Jones or some lo-fi beats), and let’s move.

1. The Cat-Cow Reset (2 Minutes)

Start on all fours. As you inhale, drop your belly and look up (Cow). As you exhale, round your spine toward the ceiling, tucking your chin to your chest (Cat). Don’t rush this. Imagine you are articulating your spine one vertebra at a time. It’s the best way to wake up that lower back stiffness.

2. World’s Greatest Stretch (2 Minutes per side)

This is a classic for a reason. Start in a high plank, step your right foot forward to the outside of your right hand. Now, take your right elbow and try to touch it to your right instep. Then, rotate your right arm all the way up to the ceiling, following your hand with your gaze. Twist it out. Do 10 reps on each side. It hits your hips, your thoracic spine, and your glutes all at once. Efficiency is the name of the game here.

3. Thread the Needle (1 Minute per side)

Still on your hands and knees, take your right arm and thread it underneath your left arm, resting your right shoulder and ear on the floor. Reach that left arm forward. You’ll feel a delicious stretch across the back of your shoulder blade. If you carry your stress in your shoulders like I do, this is going to feel like a literal weight is being lifted.

4. 90/90 Hip Swivels (2 Minutes)

Sit on the floor with your knees bent at 90-degree angles—one leg in front of you, one to the side. Keep your chest tall. Rotate your hips to switch sides, keeping your heels on the ground. This is my secret weapon for anyone who complains about 'tight hips.' It’s a bit of a brain teaser at first, but once you get the flow, your hips will thank you for the rest of your life.

Be Kind to Your Body

Here’s my final piece of advice: don’t force anything. If you’re shaking or holding your breath, back off. Stretching should feel like a 'good' discomfort, not a 'please-don’t-let-me-snap-a-ligament' pain.

Since I’ve started prioritizing these 10 minutes, my recovery has improved, my anxiety is way more manageable, and honestly? My squats have never felt better. When your muscles aren't fighting you because they’re stuck in a knot, you’d be surprised at what you can actually lift in the gym.

Let’s Keep the Conversation Going

I want to hear from you! Are you a morning stretcher or a 'stretching-while-watching-Netflix-at-night' kind of person? Let me know how this routine felt for you in the comments below or slide into my DMs! I’m always here to cheer you on, even if it’s just for 10 minutes of self-care.

Stay lovely, and promise me you’ll show up for yourself today!
