Unlock Your Potential: A Mobility Routine That Actually Feels Good

Let’s Talk About That 'Stiff' Feeling
Hey friends! If you’ve been following me for a while, you know I’m the girl who’s already at the gym rack by 5:00 AM. But let’s be real—even at 23, with all the coffee and the pre-workout buzz, there are mornings where I feel like a rusted-out robot. You know that feeling, right? You try to squat, and your hips feel like they’re glued together. Or you go to reach for a barbell overhead and your shoulders scream, ‘Absolutely not!’
I used to think that 'getting fit' meant just lifting heavier and running faster. When I was going through my own rough patch as a teenager—dealing with a lot of anxiety and a really messy relationship with food—I treated the gym like a prison sentence. I pushed until I broke. But honestly? Learning how to move well was the piece of the puzzle that actually saved me. It taught me to appreciate what my body can do rather than just trying to punish it for how it looked.
Today, I want to walk you through the mobility routine I use every single morning before I start my sessions. This isn’t a boring, hour-long yoga flow (ain’t nobody got time for that at 5 AM). This is ten minutes of intentional movement to wake up your joints and prep your nervous system for the day.
Why Mobility is Your Best Friend
Before we dive into the moves, let’s clear the air. Flexibility is about how far your muscles can stretch. Mobility is about how well you can control your joints through a range of motion. You can be flexible enough to touch your toes, but if you don't have the stability to hold your spine in place while you pick up a heavy deadlift, you’re just asking for an injury.
When I started focusing on my mobility, my lifts actually skyrocketed. Why? Because when your hips, ankles, and shoulders aren't fighting against tightness, your body stops trying to compensate. You stop wasting energy and start putting it exactly where it belongs: into your work.
The 10-Minute 'Wake Up' Routine
I do these movements in my living room or right on the gym floor before the sun comes up. No equipment needed—just your body and a little bit of focus.
1. The World’s Greatest Stretch (3 reps per side)
Start in a high plank, step your right foot forward to the outside of your right hand. Keep your back leg straight. Take your right arm and reach it up toward the ceiling, twisting your torso. Bring it back down and tap your elbow to the floor if you can. This opens up your hips, thoracic spine, and hamstrings all at once.
2. Cat-Cow into Child’s Pose (5 rounds)
Get on all fours. As you inhale, drop your belly and look up (cow). Exhale, tuck your chin, and round your spine like a Halloween cat. Then, push your hips back into a child’s pose, reaching your fingertips forward to stretch out those lats. It feels so good to just decompress the spine after sleeping.
3. 90/90 Hip Switches (10 total)
Sit on the floor with your knees bent at 90-degree angles (one leg in front, one to the side). Keeping your heels on the ground, rotate your knees over to the other side without using your hands. This is the absolute best way to grease the hip joints and stop that ‘stuck’ feeling in your pelvis.
4. Ankle Rocks (10 per side)
Get into a half-kneeling position. Drive your front knee forward over your toes while keeping your heel firmly planted on the floor. Hold for two seconds, then come back. Tight ankles are often the hidden culprit behind bad squat form. Don't skip this!
Consistency Over Perfection
I know, I know—it’s easier to just jump straight onto the treadmill or grab the dumbbells. But think of mobility like brushing your teeth. You don’t brush your teeth once and expect them to stay clean forever, right? It’s a daily maintenance thing.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, just pick two of these. Do them for five minutes. If you miss a day, don't spiral. Just show up the next morning. My whole fitness philosophy is built on that grace—we are human, we are works in progress, and we are allowed to take up space while we figure it out.
