Weight Loss Tips That Actually Respect Your Mental Health

Let’s Talk About Weight Loss Without the Dread
Hey, bestie. It’s Brooke. If you’ve been following me for a while, you know I’m not about the ‘no pain, no gain’ toxic culture that used to keep me up at night back when I was a teenager. I’ve been there—the anxiety, the scale-watching, the feeling like if I didn’t hit a certain number, I wasn’t 'doing it right.'
I’m 23 now, living here in the Scottsdale heat, and I’ve spent the last few years learning that your body is a vessel to be celebrated, not a project to be punished. If you’re looking to lose weight, I want you to do it in a way that actually leaves you with energy, not burnout. Let’s get into some weight loss tips that are actually sustainable and—dare I say—kind.
Stop Tracking 'Good' vs 'Bad' Foods
I see this all the time at the gym. Someone finishes a great leg day, feels amazing, and then spends the next two hours feeling guilty about a slice of pizza they had at lunch. Please, stop that.
Nutrition is about fuel. When we label foods as 'bad,' we give them power over our emotions. Instead of obsessing over restriction, focus on addition. How can you add more protein to your breakfast? How can you add a side of greens to your dinner? When you crowd your plate with nutrient-dense foods that make you feel strong, you naturally have less room for the stuff that makes you feel sluggish. It’s not about being perfect; it’s about being nourished.
NEAT is Your Best Friend
People think weight loss is just about grinding out hours on the treadmill until you’re blue in the face. Honestly? I’d rather be doing literally anything else.
NEAT stands for Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis. It’s just a fancy way of saying ‘all the movement you do that isn’t a formal workout.’ Walking your dog, taking the stairs instead of the elevator, cleaning your apartment, or even just fidgeting while you work—these things add up way more than one hour in the gym. If you’re feeling stagnant, don’t kill yourself with another HIIT class. Just aim for an extra 2,000 steps a day. Put on a podcast, grab a matcha, and just walk. Your cortisol levels will thank you, and your body will respond better when it isn't constantly stressed out.
Rethink the 'All-or-Nothing' Mindset
This is the biggest hurdle for my online coaching clients. You miss one workout, or you have a weekend where you eat out a few times, and suddenly the brain-weasels start saying, 'Well, I already ruined it, might as well give up for the week.'
That is a trap. If you get a flat tire, do you get out and slash the other three? Of course not! You fix the tire and keep driving. If you miss a workout, just show up the next day. If you have a heavy meal, your next meal is just an opportunity to nourish yourself again. Consistency isn’t about being perfect 100% of the time; it’s about getting back on track 100% of the time.
Strength Training is Your Secret Weapon
I know, I’m a trainer, so I’m biased. But hear me out: building muscle is the absolute best way to support a healthy metabolism. When you lift weights, you aren't just 'burning calories' in the moment; you are building a machine that burns energy more efficiently around the clock.
Plus, there is nothing—and I mean nothing—that builds confidence like hitting a new personal best on your squat. Feeling strong changes the way you carry yourself. You stop looking at your body as something that needs to ‘shrink’ and start looking at it as something that needs to be ‘capable.’ That shift in perspective? That’s where the magic happens.
Prioritize Your Sleep Like a Job
I used to be the girl who pulled all-nighters studying Kinesiology at ASU and thought sleep was optional. Big mistake. Your body repairs, recovers, and regulates hunger hormones while you sleep. If you’re chronically underslept, your hunger hormones (ghrelin and leptin) get completely out of whack, making you crave sugar and high-fat foods just to survive the day.
If you want to reach your goals, treat your bedtime like a non-negotiable appointment. No phone, cool room, consistent time. Getting 7–8 hours of quality sleep is literally a weight loss hack that no one talks about enough.
Let’s Keep the Conversation Going
At the end of the day, my goal for you isn't just a number on the scale. I want you to wake up feeling like you have the capacity to take on your day, whatever that looks like. I’m so proud of you for even starting to look at this differently.
