Why Body Weight Exercises Are Your Secret Weapon for Longevity

Let’s Talk About the Basics (That Are Actually Hard)

Happy August, besties! We’re deep into the Scottsdale heat, and let me tell you, sometimes the thought of dragging my gym bag through 110-degree weather to the rack feels like a Herculean task. Even for me, the girl who lives for the 5 a.m. alarm, there are days when I just want to roll out my mat in my living room, blast some house music, and move my body without the pressure of a barbell.

Lately, I’ve had so many of you message me asking if you have to lift heavy to see results. And I get it—social media makes it look like if you aren’t hitting a PR on your squat, you’re basically doing nothing. But here’s the truth from someone who’s been in the industry for a while: body weight exercises aren’t just the "intro" to fitness. They are the foundation of everything I do with my clients, and they saved my own relationship with movement back when I was struggling with my mental health and overcomplicating my workouts.

Why Body Weight Training Isn’t Just for Beginners

When I was in my late teens, dealing with some really gnarly anxiety and a super toxic relationship with food, I thought I had to be in the gym for two hours running until I couldn't feel my legs to be "healthy." It was exhausting, and honestly, it kept me stuck in a cycle of burnout.

Learning to master my own body weight was the shift that changed everything. It taught me that my body is a tool, not an object to be punished. When you focus on body weight movements, you aren't just moving a load; you’re learning mind-muscle connection. You’re learning how to stabilize, how to breathe, and how to control your space. If you can’t master a perfect body weight squat, why are we rushing to put 135 pounds on your back?

The “No-Excuses” Toolkit: Three Moves to Master

If you want to build a physique that is functional, strong, and actually capable of doing life, start here. These are the moves I give my clients when they’re traveling, short on time, or just burnt out on the heavy lifting scene.

1. The Eccentric Push-Up

Most people rush their push-ups. I want you to slow it down. Lower yourself toward the floor for a count of four seconds, hold for one, and explode back up. By focusing on the eccentric (the lowering phase), you’re getting way more time under tension. It’s a game-changer for chest and shoulder definition.

2. The Bulgarian Split Squat (Unweighted)

I know, I know—everyone loves to hate on the split squat. But trust me, doing these unweighted with perfect form is harder than you think. Stand about two feet in front of a chair or couch, pop one foot back on it, and drop that back knee toward the floor. Keep your chest tall and your core braced. If you want to love leg day, this is the move that builds that mind-muscle connection. You’ll feel it in your glutes immediately.

3. The Bear Crawl

This is my favorite full-body burner. Get on all fours, lift your knees an inch off the ground, and crawl forward and backward while keeping your back flat like a table. It’s incredible for core stability and shoulder health. Do 45 seconds of this, and tell me your heart rate isn't up!

How to Level Up Without a Gym Membership

The beauty of body weight training is the ability to use "progressive overload" without needing more weight plates. You can:

Moving with Intention

I’m not saying you have to quit the gym. I love my barbell sessions! But I want you to remember that the gym is just a place. Your fitness? That happens in your brain and your nervous system.

When you stop obsessing over the numbers on the plates and start focusing on how your body actually moves, everything changes. You stop seeing a "workout" as a chore and start seeing it as a way to thank your body for everything it does for you. That’s the kind of consistency that lasts a lifetime, not just for the summer.

So, for the rest of this week, I challenge you to ditch the heavy rack for at least one session. Find a corner of your room, put on your favorite playlist, and just move. Focus on the squeeze, the breath, and the strength you already have inside you.

How are you guys feeling about your movement lately? Are you hitting a plateau, or are you feeling that post-workout high? Shoot me a DM on Personible or drop a comment below—I want to hear what’s working for you right now. Let’s get after it, besties!
