Why Morning Exercise is My Secret Weapon (And How to Actually Wake Up)

By Brooke — Your gym bestie who actually shows up at 5am. Will make you love leg day. ·

It’s Not About Being a Morning Person

Let’s get one thing straight: I am not a "morning person" by nature. If you told teenage Brooke that she’d be setting a 4:45 AM alarm voluntarily, she would have laughed in your face while hiding under her duvet. Back then, my mornings were defined by anxiety and that heavy, sinking feeling of not knowing how to handle the day ahead.

Fitness didn't just change my body; it literally saved my life. It gave me a foundation when everything else felt like shifting sand. But the biggest game-changer? Moving my workouts to the morning. It wasn't about being a superhero; it was about taking control of my nervous system before the rest of the world could dump their stress on me.

If you’re struggling to drag yourself out of bed, I promise you: this isn't about willpower. It’s about strategy. Here is how I actually make morning exercise work without hating my life.

The “Launchpad” Method: Setting Up for Success

If you have to think about what you’re doing at 5:00 AM, you’ve already lost. Your brain is not firing on all cylinders yet. You need to remove every single friction point between your bed and the squat rack.

I call this the "Launchpad." Before I go to sleep, my gym bag is packed, my shaker bottle is ready on the counter, and my gym clothes are laid out—literally right next to my bed. I’m talking socks, sports bra, shorts, the works. If I wake up and my gym clothes are the first thing I touch, the commitment is already made.

Also, stop negotiating. When the alarm goes off, don't ask yourself, "Do I want to go to the gym?" The answer will always be no. Instead, make the goal simply to put your feet on the floor. Just get vertical. Once you’re standing, the hardest part is over.

Fueling for the AM: Keep It Simple

I get asked all the time: "Brooke, should I eat before my 5 AM session?"

Here’s the deal: You don’t want to be doing heavy deadlifts with a full stomach, but you also shouldn't be running on empty. If you’re waking up 20-30 minutes before you head out, don't try to cook a three-course breakfast. You’ll just feel sluggish and bloated.

I usually grab something small and fast-digesting—like half a banana or a quick scoop of electrolytes. It gives my brain just enough glucose to stop the "I'm dying" feeling during the first set of warmups. Save the real fueling for your post-workout meal. That’s when the magic happens anyway.

How to Build the Habit (Without Burning Out)

If you’re currently working out at 6 PM and trying to switch to 5 AM, don’t do it all at once. If you jump from a night owl schedule to a pre-dawn grind, you’re going to be wrecked by Wednesday.

Try shifting your wake-up time by 15 minutes every two days. It sounds slow, but it’s sustainable. And please, listen to your body. If you had a terrible night of sleep, it is okay to swap that heavy leg day for a mobility flow or a brisk walk. Consistency is about showing up over months and years, not about smashing a PR when your central nervous system is fried.

The Mental Shift: It’s Your Hour, Not Your Chore

When I was in my teens, I felt like life was happening to me. Now, that early morning hour is the one time of day where I am the one in charge. It’s my quiet time. No emails, no texts, no clients asking about nutrition plans—just me, the music, and the iron.

When you start viewing morning exercise as a gift to your future self rather than a punishment for your body, the alarm clock stops being the enemy. It becomes your invitation to start the day with a win. You’ve already accomplished something hard by 7:00 AM. What else can you handle? Everything.

Let’s Do This Together

Listen, I know the first week is going to be a little rough. You’re going to be tired, you’re going to wonder why you’re doing this, and you’re going to want to hit snooze. But I’m telling you, once that endorphin hit kicks in and you walk out of the gym while everyone else is just starting their commute? You’re going to feel like a total boss.
