Dressing for the Season: Why Your Closet Needs a Culinary Refresh

From the Kitchen to the Closet: Why Seasonal Fashion Matters

If you’ve been following me for a while, you know my philosophy: life is about how we nourish ourselves. Whether it’s the way we season a pot of black beans or the way we choose to show up in the world, everything is an act of care. Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about how my closet mirrors my kitchen.

In San Antonio, May is a glorious, sweltering beast. It’s that transition where the air gets thick, the cilantro in the garden starts to bolt, and suddenly, my heavy winter sweaters feel like wearing a wool blanket in a sauna. Just like I wouldn’t dream of serving a heavy pozole in the middle of a triple-digit afternoon, I’ve learned that my wardrobe needs a 'seasonal shift' to keep me feeling vibrant and comfortable. Good food is self-care, but so is dressing for the life you’re actually living right now.

The “Mise-en-Place” of Your Wardrobe

When I was working the line in my twenties, the first thing we learned was mise-en-place. Everything in its place. If your station is cluttered, your service suffers. Your closet is exactly the same. Before you go out and buy a single new piece for summer, you have to do a reset.

Take everything out—yes, everything. Even that one dress you tell yourself you’ll wear 'when you lose five pounds' (spoiler: stop doing that to yourself, you deserve to feel beautiful in your body today). If it doesn’t make you feel like you can move, breathe, and enjoy a taco without feeling restricted, it goes into the donation pile. Keep only what serves you in this season of your life. When you clear the clutter, you make room for the light, airy pieces that actually let you breathe.

Ingredients for a Perfect Summer Closet

When I’m developing a recipe, I look for quality ingredients. The same goes for what I put on my skin. In May, I prioritize natural fibers. Linen, cotton, and lightweight blends are the 'fresh herbs' of your wardrobe—they don’t weigh you down, and they handle the heat beautifully.

1. Breathability is Key: If it’s synthetic and doesn’t breathe, don’t bring it home. You’ll be miserable by noon. Look for linen sets that feel like pajamas but look like you’ve got your life together. 2. The 'Apron-Friendly' Aesthetic: Look, I’m a cook. I’m messy. I love a good midi-dress that allows me to move, but I also look for patterns that hide the occasional accidental splash of salsa verde. Think bold prints or textures that have a bit of 'life' to them. 3. Transitional Layers: Even in San Antonio, the AC can be brutal. Keep a lightweight, oversized button-up or a light knit cardigan on the back of your chair. It’s the sartorial equivalent of keeping a light broth on standby—always there when things get a little too chilly.

Let Your Personal Style Reflect Your Soul

Abuela always told me that you shouldn't just cook for people; you should feed them with intention. When I pick out an outfit, I try to do the same. I’m not interested in trends that make me look like everyone else. I’m interested in pieces that feel like me.

This year, I’m leaning into earth tones and bright, spicy pops of color. A deep terracotta skirt, maybe a bright marigold top that reminds me of the marigolds we used to plant. When you dress in colors that make you feel energized, you’re essentially feeding your spirit. Don’t be afraid to take up space. Wear the big earrings, put on the comfortable sandals, and go out and live your life.

A Note on Sustainable Care

Remember, your clothes are like good produce—they need proper care to last. Wash your linens on gentle, hang them to dry when you can, and don’t over-wash your denim. Treat your favorite pieces with the same respect you treat your best cast iron skillet. When you care for your things, they take care of you right back.

My orange cat, Churro, likes to 'help' me fold laundry by sitting directly on top of the clean linens, which—let’s be honest—adds a bit of chaotic seasoning to my day. But that’s life, right? A little bit of mess, a lot of love, and the joy of finding what works for you.

So, what’s your go-to look for these warm May days? Are you a linen-set person, or are you living in your favorite vintage sundress? Let’s chat in the comments—I want to hear how you’re styling yourself for the season. And remember, whether you’re cooking or dressing, do it with love. Let me feed your curiosity, and you tell me what makes you feel the most like 'you'.
