Skincare Routine 101: Keeping That 'Home Cook' Glow When Life Gets Busy

Let’s Talk About That 'Kitchen Glow'

If you’ve been following my kitchen adventures on TikTok, you know my philosophy: you don’t need a Michelin-star setup to make a meal that feels like a hug. It’s the same way I feel about skincare. People see these elaborate 12-step routines online and think they need a chemistry degree and a small fortune just to wash their face. Spoiler: you don’t.

Since it’s October in Minnesota, my skin is currently screaming for help. The wind is biting, the radiator in my classroom is hissing, and if I’m being honest, my face feels a bit like a piece of sourdough that didn't get enough steam in the oven. It’s dry, it’s tight, and it’s begging for some nourishment. Today, I’m breaking down my routine—not as a dermatologist, but as a teacher who barely has time to eat her lunch before the bell rings and a home cook who knows that the best results come from simple, high-quality ingredients.

The 'Mise en Place' of Your Face

In the kitchen, mise en place—having everything in its place—is how you stay sane. Skincare is the same. If you have to hunt for your moisturizer under a pile of mail or a stack of graded essays, you’re just not going to do it.

My routine is built on three simple pillars: cleanse, hydrate, and protect. That’s it. My grandma used to tell me that if you treat your skin like you treat a good cast iron skillet—gentle cleaning, consistent seasoning, and avoiding anything too harsh—it’ll last you a lifetime. She wasn't wrong.

Step 1: The Gentle Cleanse

After a day of teaching middle schoolers, I come home feeling like I’ve been through a whirlwind. My skin has picked up everything from whiteboard marker dust to the general stress of a Tuesday. I use a cream-based cleanser. Nothing that strips the skin. If your skin feels 'squeaky clean' after washing, it’s actually crying for help because you’ve stripped away all its natural oils. Think of it like washing a vintage pan: you want to clean it, but you don’t want to scour away the seasoning. Look for something that leaves your face feeling soft, not tight.

Step 2: The Hydration 'Starter'

Remember Gary, my sourdough starter? He needs regular feedings to stay active and bubbly. Your skin is the same. In the fall, I add a hyaluronic acid serum while my skin is still slightly damp from the sink. It pulls that moisture into the skin, almost like how a good soak helps dried beans cook evenly. It’s a small step that takes five seconds, but it’s the difference between looking like a wilted piece of kale and a fresh, hydrated glow.

Step 3: Seal It In

This is where the magic happens. I use a thicker moisturizer in October. My skin is thirsty, and it needs a bit of a barrier against the Minneapolis chill. If you’re feeling extra dry, don’t be afraid to add a tiny drop of facial oil over your moisturizer. It’s like adding a pat of butter to a pan right before you serve—it adds that final bit of richness that seals everything in and keeps the goodness from evaporating.

Why Consistency Beats Complexity

I see a lot of people jumping from product to product, trying the latest 'viral' trend every week. If you did that with cooking, you’d never learn how to actually master a recipe. Skincare is about showing up for yourself consistently. Even on the nights when I’m exhausted from grading papers and just want to collapse into bed, I make myself do the three steps. It’s a way of telling myself, 'Maren, you matter enough to take care of.' That’s the Caregiver in me speaking, but honestly? It’s also just good self-preservation.

Ingredient Spotlight: Keep It Simple

You don’t need an ingredient list that reads like a physics textbook. Look for ceramides (which repair the skin barrier), glycerin (the ultimate hydrator), and antioxidants. If you see a product that claims to do twenty different things, it’s probably a bit like a kitchen gadget that claims to do everything—it usually ends up being a clutter-maker that doesn’t do any one thing particularly well.

A Note on the 'Extras'

Sometimes, I do a little 'extra' prep—like a hydrating mask on a Sunday morning while I’m feeding Gary. It’s my version of a slow-cooker meal. It takes time, it’s relaxing, and the payoff is huge. But if you’re overwhelmed, drop the masks. Drop the toners. Drop the 'extra' serums. Just stick to the core recipe: cleanse, hydrate, protect.

My biggest piece of advice? Listen to your skin. If it’s feeling sensitive, give it a break. If it’s looking dull, maybe it needs a little more exfoliation. You are the expert of your own life and your own body. You know when something feels 'off' in a recipe, and you know when something feels 'off' with your skin. Trust that intuition.

Let’s Keep the Conversation Cooking

I’m curious—what’s the one skincare 'ingredient' or product you swear by when the weather starts to turn? Are you a 'keep it simple' person like me, or do you have a secret weapon that gets you through the winter? Let me know in the comments below. I’m always looking to swap tips, whether it’s for a better sourdough crust or a better moisturizer.

Until next time, stay cozy, keep feeding your skin, and don't forget to get enough water—your face will thank you as much as your belly does after a good meal. See you around the kitchen!
