The Capsule Wardrobe: How to Simplify Your Closet Without Losing Your Spark
By Maren — Home cook energy. Not chef energy. Let's make something good with what you've got. ·
Why I’m Trading My Chaotic Closet for a Capsule Wardrobe
If you’ve ever watched my TikToks, you know my kitchen is a constant state of controlled chaos. Flour on the floor, Gary the Sourdough starter bubbling away in the corner, and a cast-iron skillet that’s seen better decades. But when it comes to getting dressed for school at 6:00 AM? I was tired of the clutter.
I realized that just like my fridge, my closet was full of 'ingredients' that didn’t actually make a meal. I had five different striped shirts, three pairs of jeans that felt like torture devices, and a whole lot of 'what if I wear this to a gala?' energy. Spoiler: I am a middle school teacher in Minneapolis. I am not going to a gala. I am grading essays and trying to avoid getting glue on my sleeve.
I decided to pivot. I’m leaning into the capsule wardrobe—not to be aesthetic or 'minimalist' in a way that feels cold or sad, but to make my mornings as easy as a one-pot pasta night. Here is how I’m doing it, midwestern-style.
Start by ‘Auditing Your Pantry’ (A.K.A. The Closet Clean-Out)
You can’t cook a good meal if your pantry is full of expired spices you don’t remember buying. The same goes for your clothes. I spent a Saturday morning pulling everything out of my closet and piling it on my bed.
Be honest with yourself. If it doesn’t fit, if it’s itchy, or if you’ve spent the last six months avoiding wearing it because it makes you feel like you’re 'saving it for a special occasion'—it goes. I kept the things that make me feel like me. For me, that’s soft sweaters, durable denim, and anything that can handle a stray marker stain. If you haven't worn it since 2022, let it go. Someone else will love it at the thrift store.
The ‘Core Ingredient’ Philosophy
When I’m building a recipe, I start with a base: onion, garlic, maybe some butter. A capsule wardrobe is exactly the same. You need your staples. For me, that’s a pair of boots that can handle a Minnesota spring, a few high-quality t-shirts, and a cardigan that feels like a hug.
Don’t feel like you need to go buy a whole new wardrobe. That defeats the purpose! Shop your own closet first. What do you reach for when you’re stressed? What makes you feel put together without trying too hard? Those are your core ingredients. The goal isn't to look like a fashion influencer; the goal is to stop the 'I have nothing to wear' mental spiral while you're trying to pack a lunch for the next day.
How to Build Your Capsule (Without Being Boring)
I know, I know—the word 'capsule' sounds beige and boring. But my kitchen isn't beige, and my clothes shouldn't be either. You can have a capsule wardrobe that’s full of personality.
1. Pick a Palette: I love earthy tones because they hide coffee spills better. Whatever makes you happy, stick to a color story. It makes mixing and matching so much easier. 2. The Layering Rule: Since I live in Minnesota, layering is my love language. Think about items that can work in May (sunny but chilly) and transition into June (sticky and hot). A denim jacket over a cotton dress? Classic. 3. Comfort is Non-Negotiable: If I can’t sit on the floor to help a student with a project in my outfit, it’s not in the capsule. Period.
Let Your Style Evolve
Remember, your capsule wardrobe isn't a museum exhibit. It’s a living thing. If you find you’re missing a certain type of top for work, add it. If you realize you never wear those trendy sneakers, swap them for something else.
Cooking is about feeding the people you love, but getting dressed is about feeding your own confidence. When I started treating my wardrobe like my kitchen—keeping only the tools and ingredients that actually serve me—everything got lighter. I spend less time staring at hangers and more time feeding my starter, prepping my lunch, and actually enjoying my mornings.
Let’s Keep the Conversation Going
I’m curious—are you a 'buy it because it’s cute' person, or are you looking to trim the fat in your closet, too? Do you have a 'uniform' that gets you through the work week?
Drop a comment down below or find me on the socials. I’d love to hear how you’re making your life a little more manageable, one choice at a time. And hey, if you’re currently in a closet-cleaning rut, just remember: start with one drawer. You don't have to overhaul the whole kitchen at once.
