The Edited Awakening: My Morning Routine for July Heat

The Art of the Slow Start

It’s July in Los Angeles. The heat is heavy, the air is buzzing with that specific, dry West Coast energy, and frankly, if you aren’t being strategic about how you move through your morning, you’re already behind.

I’ve always believed that how you start your morning determines the shizukesa—the deep, quiet stillness—of your entire day. As a 1w9, I don’t just want a routine; I want a system that removes friction. When I wake up, I don’t want to make decisions. Decisions are expensive in terms of cognitive load. By the time I’m at my desk for freelance edits, I want my mind to be a blank, crisp page.

The Non-Negotiable: Hydration and Light

I wake up at 6:30 AM without an alarm. It’s a habit born from years of practice, but it’s the most liberating thing you can do for your nervous system. The first thing I do isn’t check my phone. If I see an email about a deadline before I’ve even hydrated, I’ve already let the world dictate my pace.

Instead, I drink a full glass of filtered water with a squeeze of lemon. It’s simple, it’s grounding, and it’s a non-negotiable step toward waking up my internal organs. While I’m sipping, I open the blackout curtains. Watching the LA light shift from that soft, pre-dawn grey to the sharp, golden heat of July is my meditation. It’s about kodawari—the pursuit of perfection in the mundane details. I need that natural light to signal to my brain that it’s time to move.

The Skin Defense Protocol

Let’s address the elephant in the bathroom: your SPF habits. I’ve seen some of you in the wild, and I’m concerned. In the middle of a Southern California July, your skin is under constant siege. If you are skipping SPF because you aren’t going to the beach, please, stop. You are aging your cells for no reason, and I won’t stand for it.

My morning skincare is a three-step cycle that prioritizes protection over vanity.

1. A gentle rinse. I don't use a heavy cleanser in the morning. My skin prefers a splash of tepid water to keep the barrier intact. 2. The antioxidant serum. I’m currently rotating between a few stable Vitamin C formulations. It’s your shield against environmental stressors. 3. The SPF. This is the main event. I use a gel-based formula that leaves zero white cast. If your sunscreen feels like a chore, you’re using the wrong one. Find one that feels like a moisturizer and you’ll actually wear it every day.

Movement as Mindset

I don’t do intense, high-impact cardio in the morning heat. My body doesn't need that kind of shock. Instead, I practice twenty minutes of slow flow yoga or deep, intentional stretching.

When you move slowly, you start to notice where you’re holding tension. Is your jaw clenched? Are your shoulders creeping toward your ears? I treat my morning movement like a body scan. If I find a knot, I breathe into it. It’s an exercise in observing the self without judgment. You’re not trying to fix your body; you’re just checking in on how it’s doing today.

The Digital Fast

My mornings are a "no-input" zone until about 9:00 AM. No podcasts, no news, no social media. This is the hardest part for most people, but it’s the most rewarding. By keeping the digital noise at bay, I’m able to hold onto my own thoughts for a few extra hours. When I eventually open my laptop to start my editing work, I’m not reacting to someone else’s agenda. I’m starting from a place of wa—harmony.

Designing Your Own Flow

People often ask me if they need to wake up at 5:00 AM to be productive. My answer is always: absolutely not. You don’t need to force a rigid structure that feels like a prison. You need a system that acts as a container for your energy.

If you have ten minutes, use them well. Drink your water. Put on your sunscreen. Look at the sky. Don't touch your phone. That, right there, is a successful morning.

Consistency is the ultimate form of self-respect. When you show up for yourself at 7:00 AM, you’re telling your brain that your peace of mind is a priority. And trust me, in a city as fast-paced as LA, that’s a radical act.

How is your SPF game looking this week? Are you actually reapplying, or are you just hoping for the best? Let’s talk about your morning flow in the comments—I’m curious to know what one thing you can’t live without before you start your workday.
