The Edited Life: My Essential Wardrobe Staples for October

The Philosophy of Less

It is officially October in Los Angeles. The air has finally lost that aggressive, suffocating heat, replaced by a crispness that makes me want to pull out my cashmere and actually drink hot matcha instead of iced.

Living in LA for the better part of a decade has shifted my perspective on fashion. When I moved from Nagoya at sixteen, I brought a suitcase full of trends that didn’t quite fit the West Coast rhythm. Over the years, I’ve refined my approach. I don’t believe in 'seasons' in the traditional sense—I believe in a permanent, curated collection. My closet isn't a graveyard of impulse buys; it is a library of pieces that speak to one another. Kodawari—a Japanese term for the pursuit of perfection in one’s craft—applies to your wardrobe, too. If it doesn’t serve a purpose or bring genuine ease to your day, why is it taking up physical space?

The Foundation: Why Quality Over Quantity is Non-Negotiable

I’ve spent years editing my life, and my closet was the hardest part. I used to fall for the 'fast fashion' trap, thinking I needed a new look for every event. Now, I lean into a uniform.

My essentials are built on fabric integrity. If a white t-shirt loses its shape after three washes, it’s not an essential; it’s a chore. I look for heavyweight cotton, ethically sourced wool, and linens that actually get softer with time. When you invest in the foundation, you stop feeling like you have 'nothing to wear.' You have a set of reliable tools.

The Core Five: My October Edit

If you were to peek into my closet right now, you’d see a very specific color palette: cream, navy, charcoal, and black. Here is what I’m wearing on rotation this month:

1. The Oversized Cashmere Crew: This is my armor. I prefer a slightly relaxed fit—not sloppy, just intentional. It works over a slip dress for dinner or with vintage denim for a grocery run. The trick is to invest in a cedar block to keep the moths away. Mendou-kusai (a nuisance), yes, but worth it for a sweater that lasts a decade.

2. The High-Rise Wide-Leg Trouser: I’ve moved away from skinny jeans. A trouser with a perfect break at the ankle allows for movement. I keep mine in a wool-blend for that structure that holds its own from 9 AM meetings to 7 PM drinks.

3. The Crisp Poplin Button-Down: Ideally, an oversized men’s cut. I roll the sleeves exactly twice. It’s the ultimate chameleon piece—tucked in, left out, or layered under a sweater. If you haven't mastered the art of the 'half-tuck,' we need to talk. It’s a game-changer for silhouette balance.

4. The Leather Loafer: October in LA is the only time of year I can comfortably wear closed-toe shoes without feeling like my feet are in a sauna. A classic, unembellished leather loafer is the punctuation mark on any outfit. It says 'I am put together,' even if I haven't finished my coffee yet.

5. The Trench Coat: The ultimate transitional piece. I look for something with a belt that cinches at the waist. It’s the one item that can make a pair of leggings look like a deliberate fashion choice.

The SPF Check (Yes, Again)

I couldn't write this without a quick reminder. Just because the sun isn't scorching doesn't mean the UV rays have taken a holiday. If you are layering up for fall, don't forget the exposed skin.

I see so many people focusing on their clothes but neglecting their neck and ears when applying their SPF. If you’re wearing a boat-neck sweater, make sure your jawline and neck are protected. It is the most common place I see premature aging. I’m judging you, but only because I want your skin to look as good at forty as it does at twenty-five. Ganbatte—do your best!

Cultivating Your Own Uniform

Building an essential wardrobe isn't about clearing your closet out in one weekend. It’s a slow, quiet process of observation. Spend a week paying attention to what you actually reach for when you're in a rush. Those items are your true staples. Everything else? It’s just noise.

Take the time to mend what is broken, donate what doesn't fit, and stop buying pieces that require 'special' occasions to wear. Life is the occasion. Wear the good sweater. Use the nice dishes. Keep your skin protected and your mind clear.

How is your transition into the new season going? Are you still holding onto pieces that don't serve you, or are you in full 'edit' mode like me? Drop a comment below—I’m curious to hear what your one 'non-negotiable' item is for this October. Let’s chat.
