The Edited Skincare Routine: My Minimalist Approach to Radiance

Less is More: The Philosophy of the Edited Routine

It’s August 2026, and if I look at my vanity, it looks almost empty compared to what I see in most influencers’ PR hauls. I’m Yuki, and if you know me, you know I’ve spent the last decade oscillating between the complex J-Beauty layering rituals of my childhood in Nagoya and the fast-paced, science-backed approach I picked up during my years at UCLA.

I’ve found that the secret to the best skin of your life isn’t an eleven-step routine that leaves your face feeling like a sticky science experiment. It’s about kodawari—a Japanese term for the pursuit of perfection through meticulous attention to detail. In skincare, this means choosing three to four products that actually serve a purpose, rather than hoarding bottles for the sake of aesthetic display.

The Morning Protocol: Protection First

If we’re going to be friends, we need to have a serious talk about your SPF habits. I see you out there in the Venice sun, thinking that a "glowy" foundation with SPF 15 is cutting it. It isn't.

My morning routine is strictly functional. I don't wash my face with a cleanser in the morning—water is usually enough to maintain my barrier. After a quick splash, I go straight to a Vitamin C serum to tackle the oxidative stress of LA’s smog. Then, the non-negotiable: a high-protection, broad-spectrum sunscreen. I look for something that feels like a lightweight veil. If you aren’t applying at least a nickel-sized amount to your face and neck every single day, even when it’s cloudy, we have a problem. Seriously. This is the one area where you should never, ever be a minimalist.

The Evening Reset: Removing the Day

By the time I’m back in my apartment, my face has been exposed to everything from freeway exhaust to recycled office air. My evening ritual is about resetting.

I start with a simple oil-based cleanser. It removes the sunscreen, the pollution, and any remnants of the day. Don’t skip this step—the double cleanse isn’t just a trend; it’s the most effective way to ensure your pores stay clear without aggressive scrubbing. Following this, I use a gentle, pH-balanced cleanser to ensure my skin isn’t left feeling stripped.

Then, I introduce my active. Depending on the day, it’s either a retinol to boost cellular turnover or a soothing barrier-repair cream with ceramides. I don’t believe in over-complicating the evening. Your skin does its heavy lifting while you sleep, so give it the space to breathe rather than smothering it in ten different acids and oils.

Curating Your Vanity: How to Audit Your Collection

If you want to move toward a more curated routine, start by looking at your current collection. If you have products that you’ve only used once because they “felt okay” or because a TikTok trend told you they were a miracle worker, let them go.

Here is how to audit your routine: 1. Identify the Goal: What is your main concern? Hyperpigmentation? Hydration? Texture? If a product doesn't directly address one of these, it’s just taking up space. 2. Check the Expiry: August in LA is humid and hot. If your products have been sitting open for months, the efficacy has likely tanked. Precision means using fresh, potent formulas. 3. Test for 30 Days: Stop rotating new products every week. Your skin needs a full cycle to adapt and show results. If it isn't working after a month, it’s not for you.

The Beauty of Stillness

There is a certain shibui—a subtle, understated beauty—in having a routine that is quiet, efficient, and effective. When you stop chasing the next viral bottle, you actually start to see what your skin needs. You become an observer of your own biology.

I’ve found that when I simplify my routine, I spend less time worrying about my skin and more time actually living in my skin. My skin is healthier, my stress levels are lower, and my vanity stays clean.

Remember, skincare is a marathon, not a sprint. Consistency is the only thing that actually moves the needle. And please, for the love of everything, don't forget your neck when you’re applying your SPF tomorrow morning. I’m watching you!

What does your current routine look like? Are you ready to cut the clutter, or are you still holding onto that 10-step dream? Let’s chat in the comments—I’d love to hear what’s working (and what definitely isn’t).
