The Edited Weekend: Crafting Intentional Rest in a Busy City

Finding Stillness in the Noise
Living in Los Angeles, the pressure to be 'on' is constant. It’s a city that breathes ambition, but by the time Friday evening rolls around, my energy is usually depleted. As someone who leans into a 1w9 mentality, I find that my weekends aren’t just about ‘having fun’—they are about restoration. If my space is cluttered, my mind follows suit. If my schedule is overbooked, my skin barrier suffers.
I’ve spent the last few years curating a rhythm that feels less like a frantic pursuit of productivity and more like komorebi—that beautiful Japanese word for sunlight filtering through the leaves of trees. It’s quiet, intentional, and deeply grounding. Here is how I structure my weekends to stay sane in this heat-drenched June.
Friday: The Reset Ritual
I don’t believe in 'going out' to decompress. For me, the transition from work-mode to weekend-mode starts with a physical purge of the week’s debris. I spend an hour on Friday evening tidying my desk, clearing out my digital inbox, and—most importantly—preparing my skincare station.
If you’re still using that 3-in-1 cleanser you bought on a whim, we need to talk. Your skin works hard all week; give it something that actually respects its barrier. I do a double cleanse, a gentle exfoliation, and then I apply a hydrating serum before sliding into a silk robe. I’m currently obsessing over a minimalist K-beauty essence that feels like a drink of water for my face. Once the skin is prepped, I’m mentally clocked out. No emails, no frantic content planning. Just a hot cup of hojicha and a book that has nothing to do with my industry.
Saturday: Seeking the 'Slow'
On Saturday, I intentionally avoid the sprawling frenzy of the west side. Instead, I seek out low-stimulation environments. I love waking up early—before the heat sets in—and heading to a quiet corner of a park or a gallery.
My Saturday rule is simple: If it requires a reservation or a long line, I don’t want it. Minimalism is about removing friction, and for me, that means avoiding crowds. I bring a small, curated tote: one film camera, a high-SPF mineral sunscreen (which I will happily reapply in public, so don't even think about skipping yours), and a notebook. I spend a few hours observing. As a 5-wing, I process the world through observation. Watching how the light hits the architecture in Downtown or how the breeze moves the palms in Echo Park provides more creative fuel than any networking event ever could.
I also use this time to meal-prep in the most un-stressful way possible. I’m not doing a five-course spread; I’m washing berries, prepping a light cucumber salad, and boiling a few eggs for quick protein. It’s about being prepared enough that I don’t reach for processed snacks when the afternoon slump hits.
Sunday: The SPF and Strategy Audit
Sunday is for maintenance. It’s a day for reflection—a trait I’ve carried since my days at UCLA. I spend the morning doing a 'Life Audit.' I look at my goals for the following week and strip away anything that feels like filler. If it doesn’t serve my growth or my joy, it gets deleted from the calendar.
This is also when I do my deep skincare dive. I check the expiration dates on my products (do not hoard serums, please, they oxidize) and ensure my SPF supply is stocked. I promise you, if you don't have a reliable, non-greasy SPF for your face, neck, and hands, you are doing your future self a disservice. It’s not just vanity; it’s preservation.
If you’re feeling bold, try a 'no-phone Sunday' until at least noon. The stillness you find when you aren't scrolling is profound. It’s the difference between feeling drained and feeling centered.
Why Less is Always More
We live in a culture that mistakes busyness for importance. But as I’ve learned from my upbringing and my time in the beauty industry, true quality comes from a place of essentials-only. Whether it’s your weekend plans or your vanity, the beauty is in the editing.
Don’t feel guilty about turning down plans that don't excite your soul. Don’t feel bad about sitting in silence while everyone else is at a brunch that’s too loud and too expensive. Protect your energy. Protect your skin. And please, for the love of everything holy, reapply your sunscreen.
